Matt's box.
The box has a side hinge attached to a false back. There is sufficient spring to keep the box open. Separating the back from the false back will stablize the box and prevent it from falling over backwards. To counter the spring effect and keep the lid closed, the box has a torsion ring around the base. The lid is tucked into this.

Matt's box.
Three versions of this model are currently being diagramed. The one shown here is an 8 x 8 version. The 9 x 9 and A4 versions include an inserted band at right angles to the bottom torsion ring. A sample appears in the Hinged Boxes albumn.

BTW, the bulk of the box is made from a single sheet of food wrapper from Matt's pizza and pasta shop. The torsion ring is made from matching tissue paper.
